On this President’s Day, let us open the comment lines to one of the most commonly debated parts of American history. Who was our finest leader? Was is Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, who kept this nation together and ended the wicked institution of slavery? Was it Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a Democrat, who guided the nation through the Great Depression and World War II?
What about the worst ever? Before he’s even left office, George W. Bush has been labeled by many as the worst president ever, having overseen an economy shift from record surpluses to record deficits; being M.I.A. in the hours following the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil; still — over 6 years later — being unable to capture the man responsible for those attacks; whose administration was unable to get food and water to Americans stranded on rooftops after the City of New Orleans was destroyed by flooding… the list goes on. But is W really the worst?
What about Warren G. Harding, who once confessed “I am not fit for this office and never should have been here”? What about Franklin Pierce or James Buchanan? Both of these oft-forgotten presidents failed to prevent the nation from splitting apart in civil war.
What about Richard Nixon, who single-handedly shattered the American idealism of the presidency? Or Jimmy Carter, whose idealism butted heads with the reality of global politics?
So who is the best and the worst of men to ever lead this nation?

February 18th, 2008 at 9:41 AM
Best – Jimmy Carter (charity begins at home, he didn’t do well around the world, but he focused on domestic problems)
Worst – LBJ (his part in the coverup of the JFK assassination)
February 18th, 2008 at 9:50 AM
Best – Warren G. Harding
Worst – Woodrow Wilson
February 18th, 2008 at 10:20 AM
Yes but LBJ got the Civil Rights Act Passed.
The worst presidents, in my opinion, are Harding and Nixon. George W in a close third.
February 18th, 2008 at 2:14 PM
Worst: Harry Truman, for using the atomic bomb and setting off fifty years of a worldwide arms race.
February 18th, 2008 at 4:52 PM
George Bush has to be the worse, he has buried us in a costly war America didn’t need, a war of choice. The economy is in shambles after he took it over with surpluses. Citizens privacy is a thing of the past. Meanwhile all of his friends have made millions and billions of dollars.
Nixon was a paranoid crook, but at least he didn’t run America into the ground.
Lincoln would be one of the best for the courage to stand up to the south and slavery. Franklin D Roosevelt for creating the New Deal to pull America out of the depression and then leading America towards winning World War II.
February 18th, 2008 at 5:05 PM
George (Dummy) Bush has got to be the worst leader, ever ,in the history of mankind! Mission accccomplished, and thousands of American soldiers have been killed since his declaration of victory in Iraq!
February 18th, 2008 at 8:08 PM
Best Domestic Policy: Teddy Roosevelt (trustbusting and conservation)
Worst Domestic Policy: Ronald Regan (bankrupting the American govt in more ways than one)
Best Foreign Policy: FDR or Wilson (visionary internationalism)
Worst Foreign Policy: G.W. Bush (visionary unilateralism)
February 19th, 2008 at 1:07 AM
Best Presidents (“Best” does not mean perfect): Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson
Worst Presidents: James Buchanan, George W. Bush, Richard Nixon, Herbert Hoover
Presidents whom I admire but I don’t think are “great”: Harry S Truman, John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, William J. Clinton
Presidents whom I dislike and think are “bad” too: Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Calvin Coolidge, Warren G. Harding, William McKinley
Presidents who I would’ve put in the “Great” category but for some major … and I mean MAJOR flaws: Lyndon Baines Johnson, Andrew Jackson
February 19th, 2008 at 8:32 AM
(Day late and a buck short but:)
Top Four
1) Lincoln, 2) FDR, 3) Jefferson, 4) Truman
Bottom Four
43) Nixon, 42) GW Bush, 41) Hoover, 40) Coolidge
(I know that’s kind of a high ranking for Truman, but: a) I’m a bit parochial and b) I really think the Marshall Plan, and Truman Doctrine won the Cold War)
February 19th, 2008 at 11:33 PM
the Bush’s did more dirt before they ever got into the white house
Worst, Nancy ReaGUN, for soliciting soothsayers and psychics to determine what senile Ronny should do
February 27th, 2008 at 5:44 PM
Best—Harry Truman for using the Atomic Bomb, causing the world to restrain itself for more than 60 years after witnessing the genuine horror of nuclear weapons. (It also saved American lives).
February 27th, 2008 at 9:16 PM
“Tricky Dick” for sure!
and George Washington for voluntarily (without armed rebellion) giving up power peacefully and setting a noble tradition…last demonstrated by Al Gore.
March 1st, 2008 at 2:59 PM
In my opinoin I belive that in some cases Abraham Lincoln, is given to much credit than really earned. First, in his campain he promised to keep slavery in the south and let there be free states up north, so, Abraham Lincolon did not truly belive that slavery was terrible. However in his defense, he was a great leader during the civil war. To answer the question who is the best presidet, I would have to say FDR or Harry S. Truman. fDR for being a strong leader during WW11 and the great depression, Harry S. Truman for being smart and taking stands and also ending WW11. The worst presidents are the idiot in office as of now and John Adams even though a founding father he limited our freedoms while in office. Some of the other terrible presidents are Andrew Jackson for the trail of tears and LBJ, nixon, and Harding for all the scandalls while in office.
March 15th, 2008 at 8:04 PM
Lincoln was the best, he led us through the Civil War – no one else had a challenge like that
George W. Bush is the worst, he ruined our atnding in the world by waging pre-emptive war
May 7th, 2008 at 11:45 AM
fdr is the worst for not understanding economics and putting the u.s. in line with socialism. it’s only gotten worse from then on.
May 13th, 2008 at 8:31 AM
Abraham has to be one of the best because he stop slavery. led us all the way through the civil war no matter how hard it was for him.
JFK brought money to this country.
Clinton was also a good president. He did help us even though he made some mistakes. Everybody makes mistakes.
Harry Truman was a good man by ending WW2. There were some really good presidents but I’m not going to name them all.
The worst would be George Bush because he still hasn’t brought the troops back from the war. We are goin bankrupt in a way.
Also another bad president would have to be Richard Nixon because he tapped all the phone lines where he can here people having communications. Richard Nixon did a crime. There you go.
May 13th, 2008 at 8:32 AM
Franklin Roosevelt was also a ggod president because he helped people through The Great Depression.
May 20th, 2008 at 3:02 PM
I believe that every president has done something positive, and every president has done something negative. One must simply way the pros and cons before generalizing based on certain loosely based historical happenings. The president who might qualify as THE worst president in our history is any president who lied more than once to the american people, and then we found out they lied. (i.e. LBJ, Clinton but he’s ok too cuz he admitted it and did a lot for our economy, Bush Jr., Nixon, etc.) Any president who had their own agenda throughout office is a bad one too. And any president who was not a phenominal scholar was a bad president. (Bush jr., Carter, etc.) because scholars are smart and don’t make stupid decisions without any forthought whatsoever. And as far as deciding on a president based on their personal indiscretions, (i.e. clinton and kennedy gettin it on in the oral office) thats just dumb because its not WHO you do, its WHAT you do as president that matters, and they were both alright. The Best president based on all of the previously mentioned would almost undoubtedly be Washington. I mean he had slaves… so what… every one did back then, even your “northern abolitionists” had um, they just called them “indentured servants” (yea right). But anyone who can kick the entire british military’s ass, start a country, build a country up from the ruins of war, make it one of EXTREME world significance in 15 years, and lead a nation with false teeth and STILL have enough life in them to live a healthy and respectable life deserves not only a state, and capital district, and a Bajillion street names, high schools and rivers and statues, named after them, but low and behold, he’s on our standard for our currency. Thank god he built up the confidence to chop down that cherry tree as a boy, cuz it stuck with him for the rest of the life and help him become the man who made AMERICA what it truly should be today.
May 20th, 2008 at 7:21 PM
The best president in our History is Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He didn’t only knew how to handle one crisis, but two, with his great personal and political tools that helped the entire nation overcome the Depression in the 1930’s and the Second Global War in the 1940’s. He is just great eventhough Polio left him in a wheel chair he did his best to don’t give up because he knew that the country needed him in this worst situations.
May 21st, 2008 at 11:03 AM
I agree with Karen.
FDR is the best, because he didnt only solve the Great Depression and WWII together. He also keep us out of facism that much of the world was falling to like Germany(Hitler) and Italy(Mussolini).
Worst president is Warren G Harding.
There is a saying that goes, “George Washington could tell a lie, and Harding couldn’t tell a liar.” He had corruption in his cabinet that makes him bad. His cabinet was involved in scandals such as the “Teapot Dome” scandal.
Truman is good. He saved an estimated 1 million lifes by dropping the bomb. Also the war was getting old,and many people wanted their boys back home.
Also i like Lincoln, but i dont choose him because he didnt care about the slaves. He cared about preserving the Union.
May 21st, 2008 at 11:15 AM
also JFK was in one of the most hardest decisions in United States history. The Cuban Missle Crisis. Think about it if you were president and found Soviet Missles in Cuba. You dont want to start WWIII do you? Watch Thirteen Days. It will show what he went through. As there is a part where hollywood messedup. The United States didnt want to push harder in Vietnam, because the Cuban Missle Crisis was avioded.
May 21st, 2008 at 11:16 AM
typo the “was in one” should be a “made some”
May 22nd, 2008 at 5:51 PM
If you knew how things went in the country, you would know that Bush cant declare war. Congress has to approve it. Therefore you should be eqaully mad at the majority of congressmen that approved the war.
Best President: Abraham Licoln
FDR was able to get the Nation out of the dpression with his 1st and 2nd New deal but it was major deficit spending on the Governments part.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:03 AM
Top ten U.S. Presidents
Franklin Roosevelt,Lincoln,Washington,Jefferson,Theodore Roosevelt,
Wilson,Reagan, Eisenhower,Truman
Worst U.S. Presidents
Harding,Andrew Johnson,Buchanan,Grant,Tyler,Pierce,Fillmore,
William Harrison,Taylor,George W. Bush,
June 7th, 2008 at 9:46 PM
Best-George Washington
Worst-Harding
June 16th, 2008 at 4:28 PM
Worst- Bill Clinton, everyone thinks he helped the economy. In the short run yes, but in the long run he has put our country in more debt than we can get out of.
Best- George Bush, everyone likes to blame him for what has happened. It is not his fault it is congress and the democrats fault. Our country has become really bad since the democrats have been in control and a democratic president is going to make things worse. Also, there is a point to the war. George Bush wants to protect our country from terrorist. The terrorist want all americans dead they hate us and as soon we let up they are going to do their worst. Then we will understand what Bush was trying to do.
June 17th, 2008 at 2:12 PM
top 10- Washington,Lincoln,Both Roosevelts,Taft,Jefforson,Reagan,Jfk,Truman(dropping the atomic bomb was a great decision)
Bottom 5-Harding,fillmore,Johnson, George H.W Bush(smarter than his son), George W. Bush jr.(worst president of all time and will be forever there will never be a worst president than him) reminder never elect a bush again
June 17th, 2008 at 3:50 PM
Cole, WJC had many faults, but running up deficits was not one of them. During his administration, the Senate actually followed the paygo rules that meant any new spending had to be paid for by a tax increase or spending reductions elsewhere. If only the senate still followed that rule! WJC didn’t enact those rules, but they fell apart in the next administration.
As for GWB, his party was in control from 2001-2007, so I find it hard to blame the other party for federal decisions made during that time frame.
June 17th, 2008 at 8:05 PM
Reagan, Truman, and Kennedy are overrated presidents, Kennedy in particular.
July 6th, 2008 at 5:26 PM
I agree with Clark about Kennedy. What did he do for our country??
I personally really like Nixon. I know he made a mistake, but every president has made a mistake and nobody realizes all the good things he did for our country. Nixon brought GREAT world relations, especially with China. He also ended the Vietnam War. People just give him a bad reputation and overlook the good he did for our country.
Best:Lincoln, Nixon, Washington
Worst:Kennedy, Johnson
July 7th, 2008 at 8:30 AM
Best: Ummm, T. Roosevelt
Worst: Coolidge
July 13th, 2008 at 6:53 AM
Best – Tie between John F. Kennedy, and Bill Clinton. Kennedy was a beloved man who truly brought the nation together, while Clinton guided this country into one of its strongest economic standpoints.
Worst – This one is easy…George W. Bush. Lied, deceived, neglected the American People, destroyed the economy Clinton had worked so hard to improve, and created more hatred and unrest in the middle east. Not even Nixon could surpass Bush at this point as being the worst US President in history.
Cole…your an idiot. Bush is the one who ruined our country. It didnt start happening after we took over Congress. It started a long time before that. He destroyed the rock solid and economy that Clinton created, and drained the surplus of money we had. Bush is the one pouring money into a pointless, go nowhere invasion. Dont cast the blame on someone else pal; put it where it belongs…ON BUSH.
July 18th, 2008 at 1:06 AM
Outsider looking in I wouldn’t look beyond Abe Lincoln, JFK, Ronald Reagan and of course Bill Clinton. The crazy thing is the USA had a great leader in Bill Clinton but because of some crazy rule he had to step down. This allowed George W Bush son of the even worse George Bush to take over and all but make America the laughing stock of the world.
Let’s hope ypu gus don’t mess up again and vote for McCain……..Obama may sound like Osama but make no mistake he is a JFK and a Abe Lincoln rolled into one, who won’t be anyones bitch….IMO you guys are lucky to have him he will bring the USA back to greatness
July 25th, 2008 at 1:28 AM
The very worst president. This is easy! He was a fanatical Christian who dragged his reactionary religious views with him as ideological justification for his various (mis)deeds. This man truly believed God wanted him to be president and to rule with an iron fist. This president was an ardent imperialist with a grandiose vision of how the Earth should be run. He went to war to “spread democracy” while in reality serving corporate interests. The war he entered was a completely unnecessary one. This president was no better on the home front, supporting all sorts of civil rights violations, jailing dissidents without warrant, spying on ordinary citizens. In addition to exceeding the checks and balances, dragging us into a war we never should have entered, and suppressing civil rights and liberties, this president expressed support for a Constitutional amendment to make his puritanical morality binding on the 50 states. And to top it all off, he should not have been president as he failed to win any sort of mandate in the popular vote. (He owes his win to a third party split.) Overlooking his presidency one must come to one of three conclusions: he was a bumbling idiot, a dangerous lunatic, or a diabolical fiend.
Anybody want to guess who he is?
If you answered George W. Bush, you are…
INCORRECT!
The correct answer is Woodrow Wilson, America’s single worst president!
Granted Bush is a lousy president, an atrocious president, but the worst? Arguably one of the worst, but you must have serious historical amnesia to think him the worst. Anything bad you can say about Bush applies to Wilson even more!
Some good things about Bush:
1. At least he did not enact a draft. The troops chose to join in the military. Wilson enacted the first nationwide conscription in American history, forcing American men to fight a war not in their interest.
2. The PATRIOT Act, as bad and oppressive as it is, was nowhere near as severe as Wilson’s Espionage & Sedition Act. Compared to Woodrow Wilson, Bush seems like the president of the ACLU! How many people do you know who were jailed by the Patriot Act? Also, while the abuse at Guantanamo and the denial of rights of the accused (such as Habeus Corpus) under Bush is deplorable, at least he did not seek out random citizens suspected of dissent the way Wilson’s thugs did.
3. The Iraq War, as stupid and pointless as it was, World War One was even more stupid and pointless! What did a royal family feud across the Atlantic have to do with American interests? Why should Americans die in a European civil war? Granted, the Iraq War was not really justifiable, but at least the neocons had SOME ostensible reason to go to war. What did American involvement in WW1 accomplish? Besides setting the stage for WW2 and the Holocaust, launching the USSR, and starting the Mid East crisis?
4. At least Bush does not appear to be particularly racist. Woodrow Wilson was an anti-Semite who despised blacks and Asians. In fact, Woodrow Wilson was the original white nationalist. He believed in self-determination for white ethnicities (except Germans), but rejected such rights for other races. He refused to include any racial fairness clause in his 14 Points. Also, Wilson was a Nordicist, arguably more so than Hitler (who, though he was obviously more racist, at least included Asiatic peoples such as Japanese and Tibetans as “honorary Aryans”). Wilson didn’t even like the insufficiently white that much. He generously provided lands for the various Slavic peoples, including a provision granting coastal land to Bosnia, but denied the Armenians a country (leaving their homeland split between the USSR and the Republic of Turkey) and denying wartime ally Greece territorial gains or even insisting that Britain allow its Greek subjects self-determination on Cyprus. On the home front, Woodrow Wilson celebrated white supremacy, being an apologist for the Ku Klux Klan and ousting African-Americans from government positions.
5. Woodrow Wilson could be blamed for Prohibition, and the fascistic 18th Amendment which allowed it.
So in sum, Bush was a terrible president, but Woodrow Wilson was worse in every way.
As for the second worst president, that honor goes to Theodore Roosevelt. He also deserves the title “single most overrated president.” Theodore Roosevelt was almost as bad as Woodrow Wilson in most respects, in some ways worse (being somewhat more statist in times of peace, and much more belligerent in war), but he has a few redeeming qualities: notably he was considerably less racist than Woodrow Wilson, he lacked Wilson’s nauseating pretentious idealism, was less of a chickenhawk (at least sending his sons to fight, unlike the hypocritical Wilson), and of course, Roosevelt does not have the distinction of dragging America into Europe’s Great War. On the other hand, Theodore Roosevelt, by running as a Bull Moose (“Progressive”), split the Republican vote, handing the election to Woodrow Wilson (who otherwise would have died in relative obscurity). If not for T.R. Taft would have easily won his bid for reelection. Also, there is no doubt that had Teddy Roosevelt been president during Wilson’s terms, he would have just as surely dragged us into the war.
So at most, George W. Bush gets 3rd place for worst president, but I am not even sure about that.
Other runner-ups: William McKinley (that proto-neocon for starting the Spanish-American War and thus founding the American Empire, for giving proto-neocon T.R. and the “Progressives” a head start, indirectly leading to proto-neocon Wilson), Andrew Jackson (his genocidal policies towards American Indians, notably ethnically cleansing the Cherokee from the American Southeast, his one redeemable feature being his opposition to a national bank, which Woodrow Wilson eventually would create), Harry S. Truman (nuking Japan, his proto-neocon Domino Theory “let’s fight the commies here so we do not have to fight them over there!”), James K. Polk (Mexican-American War), Richard Nixon (being a crook), George H. W. Bush (setting the example for his son)
July 31st, 2008 at 12:49 AM
best, FDR what a hard worker
worst GWB what the fuck
August 3rd, 2008 at 12:48 AM
I agree with Kato to the extent that he believes that Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt were bad Presidents. I think Truman did the right thing in using the bomb to end the war, as it saved American and Jap lives. The Japs would not have surrendered without the bomb, and the fact that it took TWO bombs proves that point. The Mexican War was questionable in its origins, but I think we should keep California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, and the snippets of the other states we picked up in the process.
August 4th, 2008 at 12:37 AM
George Bush is not the worst president ever! nor is he in the bottom 5! i mean come on! Ill give u 5 presidents that wr worse then Bush. 1.Herbert Hoover (2 words GREAT DEPRESSION) 2.James Buchanan 3.Warren G. Harding 4.Franklin Pierce 5.James Garfield (with others served less then a year in office. Best would be Washington, Lincon, or Truman (Give em’ hell Harry)! there im not a fan of Bush but he’s not the worst ever….so far he’s in deep shit right now so well see!
August 6th, 2008 at 10:11 PM
Fuck u TSMITH bush is worst ever! Lincon is the best! tur done!
August 8th, 2008 at 4:42 PM
Worst – Lincoln for plunging us into an un-needed Civil war, the slavery issues was dealt with in every other nation on earth at that time with out a war, the war had more to do with Lincoln’s increased taxes (among other things, he was the first to issue an income tax before the 16th amendment made it legal) and his increased tariff’s. He was a racist who used a people as political leverage, and lied to the American people about the nature of the union.
Best – William Henry Harrison because he died after 31 days in office so he did not have enough time to do anything wrong.
Greatest – Thomas Jefferson for being the first president to fight Islamic extremists (Barbary war), and for being en enemy of tyranny in all it’s forms.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:38 PM
BEST = Coolidge and Washington
Worst = Lincoln
September 2nd, 2008 at 5:40 PM
Best- Abraham Lincoln
Worst- Jimmy Carter I think?
September 2nd, 2008 at 5:41 PM
If we didn’t have Lincoln there would still be slavery.
September 7th, 2008 at 5:12 PM
Slavery would have been outlawed eventually, but Lincoln helped us make second last rather than dead last.
BEST (in no particular order):
Andrew Jackson
Calvin Coolidge (tell that to Mrs. Coolidge…)
Theodore Roosevelt (he gets shot during a speech and goes on for like 90 minutes)
George Dubya Bush for honorable mention because of his awesome line that shocked G8: “Goodbye from the world’s biggest polluter.”
September 13th, 2008 at 9:48 PM
best presidents are: George W. Bush, for standing up to terrorism and not caring about approval ratings. he is a great american. reagan, lincoln, and washington.
worst: bill clinton, for not standing up to terrorism which led to 9/11. and jimmy carter.
September 15th, 2008 at 3:32 PM
Best pick FDR. Worst…not too sure. I’ve seen a lot of people write W. Bush – but I’m not so sure he’s the worst.
September 27th, 2008 at 1:45 AM
Worst: FDR for prolonging the Great Depression (burning food, banning discounting, too numerous idiot economic policies to) and for being a fascist.
Best: Washington for being the first world leader since Cinncinatus to give up power.
Best Economically: Harding by far. 1920 Depression during which GDP contracted by 25% in one year was ended by him after his 1921 election. Solution? Easy slash taxes and gov spending. Yes it really is that simple.
September 27th, 2008 at 2:06 AM
Anyone who believes that FDR pulled us through the Great Depression is a total idiot. It ended after he sent 12 million US troops into WW2 and 500k of them died.
All of his New Deal nonsense (higher taxes, more gov spending, price floors etc) are well known to have made the Great Depression so long.
And to all of the naive ones that think he was a “man of the people”, FDR banned gold ownership (which was money at the time). All “good Americans” turned in their gold. Then he revalued it from $20.67 to $35 an ounce, effectively impoverishing anyone stupid enough to turn in their bullion. Obviously most of the rich families Morgans, DuPonts, etc kept their gold and stayed rich, knowing that surely nothing good would come of them giving in their bullion due to some “patriotic” scam.
The country has never been right since. Big gov, fewer rights, more socialism. Thanks FDR.
September 27th, 2008 at 7:06 PM
I’d have to revise this…
Best: Jefferson, Madison, Lincoln, T. Roosevelt, FDR, LBJ, or Jimmy Carter
Worst: Hoover, Jackson, FDR, Bush I, Clinton, Bush II
September 29th, 2008 at 7:33 PM
Best: Bill Clinton is the best ever
Worst: George W Bush kept killing America
Oh..John Mccain had the same brain as Bush. people watch out for this guy
September 30th, 2008 at 1:16 AM
BEST: Ronald Reagan… A real American Hero. Got our country together again for as long as he could
WORST: John F Kennedy… Democratics and Republicans started hating each other. A well liked ‘celeb’ does not make a good pres, nor does faking a ‘moonwalk’. Unfortunate assassanation, but that is what made him who he is today.
October 1st, 2008 at 10:41 AM
Best are by far Ronald Reagan. hegot our contry togrther also Nixon one of the smartest political minds ever he was just cockey also harry truman. The worst are JFK, Bill Clinton, Abarham lincon, And soon to be Barok Obama will be the worst ever elected if elected
October 1st, 2008 at 10:45 AM
Also Bush 1 is one of the best
October 6th, 2008 at 11:29 PM
By far Ronald Reagan. He changed the world, had a huge part in ending the cold war. His economic policies were beyond briliant. Carter had the economy so fucked up, inflation was through the roof, and our GDP was close or below zero, Reagan fixed that. We are going through rough times right now, I wish we could ronald in office. I think FDR was overrated a little bit, he did take us through some of the worst times in our history, so he’s gotta be up there. Abe Lincoln could very well be number one. JFK stood up for minorities, which was great, he really didnt do anything else, he wasnt a bad president, but he was ver overrated. All of you who think George W. Bush is the worst president ever, are fuckin stoned. after 9/11, everyone was worried we’d be attacked again, worried sick about our safety. If clinton took care of business like he should have, 9/11 would have never happened. Bush has kept us safe, yes we are in major debt, but bush will go down as an above average president at the least. Our economy was great until Liberals took over Congress in 06. Everything has been terrible beacuse of it, yet bush gets all the blame which is bullshit. Could he have managed it better, of course, but did he cause the problem? Absoultely not. Bush is a hero, and if this bailout works, he’ll go down as one of the best EVER.
Carter and Lyndon B. johnson are the worst. Clinton was probably the worst PERSON to enter office, he actully was a decent president though. He really fucked up in alot of ways. And he didnt just leave a bad taste in Monicas mouth like most would assume.
Best: Lincoln, Reagan, Washington, FDR, Jefferson, Roosevelt
October 12th, 2008 at 9:48 PM
Abraham Lincoln is the best. No one wrote a speech so moving as the Gettysburg Address. Though he didn’t fully care about slaves over preserving the Union, he did recognize the inhumanity in it at a time when it was not so conventional to do so. Above all, I don’t know if we’ve had a president care as much as Lincoln. His face changed so much during his term.
Worst has yet to be determined but I’d say Bush and Carter are up there.
October 17th, 2008 at 3:17 PM
Any man that can take down the Soviet Union without firing a single shot has got to be the best President ever. So without question Ronal Reagan. The worst however has got to be Clinton. 5 attacks on the U.S. while he was in office and nothing was ever done about them even though everytime he promised to hunt down those responsible. He alone is responsible for 9/11
November 2nd, 2008 at 8:12 PM
I have gotta say Lincoln is the best (soon Obama will be tied). Sure he pulled us into a Civil War, but it was goanna happen anyway if not during his term. I think he chose the right decision to abolish slavery. He was not a racist. He said “I am not a master, for I am not a slave”. Another quote “Where slavery is, there liberty cannot be. Thus Where liberty is there slavery cannot be”. second place is Eisenhower for the Little Rock case when fighting against segregation. Third JFK easily. He solved the Cuba Missile Crisis the good way and was one of the hardest decisions in American History. Fourth Bill Clinton for bringing our economy back on track and Bush had to force it down again. Fifth is George Washington tied with Ulysses Grant for fighting the KKK and also FDR for leading us out of the Great Depression and leading us through WWII.
Last Place are:
1. George W. Bush tied with Woodrow Wilson (both started unnecessary wars or pulled us into 1)
2. Madison tied with Nixon
Wilson did not only pull us in World War, but practically cheated in his second election by saying he kept us out of the war and pulled us in the war. He was also a segregationist and did the worst job for being president on the 50th Anniversary of the Gettysburg Address. At least the 14 points was pretty good. FYI he did not lead to a trigger to WWII, but if the Allies went with the 14 points, there would be no WWII
Bush pulled us in Iraq (and he cannot pronounce the name. It’s not an apple product, it’s pronounced EE-RAUK FYI. And where did you run (Iran)? That’s pronounced EE-RAUN) Sorry, just had to let him know. Also there were no terrorists in Iraq until he turned it into an anarchy. The terrorists were in Afghanistan and we almost had them until someone (cough cough Bush) ordered us to attack Iraq. He also pulled us into another economic breakdown.
Nixon commited a crime and Madison pulled us into a war that almost destroyed the United States
November 4th, 2008 at 4:55 PM
Best Washington refused 2 b a king Worst Jackson Trail of Tears.
November 7th, 2008 at 12:06 AM

November 13th, 2008 at 8:17 PM
Best: Ronald Reagon (ended biggest war ever and saved all of us from nuclear war)
2nd: Abe Lincoln 3rd: Harry S. Truman (only democrat I would ever vote for)
Worst: John Tyler and Jimmy Carter
November 13th, 2008 at 8:21 PM
Hey anominous you dont understand:
Bill Clinton screwed the economy up and all the wars you mentioned was fought for self defense including Iraq. Do you want the war here or there?
November 16th, 2008 at 11:44 AM
Best: Tie between Ronald Reagon and Nixon. Reagon saved this country from Carter enough said!
And though many might disagree with me on him, Nixon. If you read his international policies he was awesome! He built so many relations with countries we once considered enemies. I’m not saying his ethics were correct, but he was a good president.
Worst: Kennedy, Carter, Clinton, G.W Bush
I know I will hear about his one, but historically speaking Kennedy was not a good president, he lost the Monroe Doctrine after 150+ years for no good reason and the whole missle crisis situation should have been handled better by him (trust me this is what I am writing my thesis on). I can add way more but I won’t right now.
Carter was just horrible, I don’t even need to explain that one. Great human being, terrible president.
Clinton, thank you for opening up the housing market for EVERYONE which put us into the situation we are at now.
And Bush, who wouldn’t have been so bad if he had just listened to his people more.
For those of you saying Bush Sr. was the the worst, please please look into that, he was actually a good president and tried to very hard to do what he said he would for the country but it’s hard to do that when 2/3 of congress is democrat and voting against you.
November 16th, 2008 at 7:05 PM
Bill C. (Best) did so much for USA (president = USA)
…… Bush (worse)
Where will BAMA finish up?
November 16th, 2008 at 7:26 PM
Seldel,
I agree with you regarding Kennedy, worst ever although BO will soon take his place! Disagree with Bill Clinton being responsible for mortgage meltdown/economic crisis facing America and the world today.
The global economic crisis can be attributed to greedy corporate executives, loan officers, mortgage brokers, realtors, appraisers, sellers and borrowers ALL conspiring to defraud financial institutions with the blessings of corrupt politicians ie. Democrats, Republicans, and Independents alike!
December 8th, 2008 at 11:05 AM
Best has got to be Ronald Reagon..he ended a 50 year cold war and built up our economy that Carter had destroyed.
Worst has got to be Carter..He was stupid enough to think that if we destroyed our nuclear weapon, the USSR are would also..Retarded!!!! I’m from Georgia and Carter was the biggest embarrasment Georgia has ever had..
January 20th, 2009 at 11:02 AM
obama the best
bush the worst
January 20th, 2009 at 11:11 AM
my president black, lambo blue. If you like george its sucks for you!
January 20th, 2009 at 12:51 PM
well bush ISN’T the worst president…….i hate when those dumb@$$ democrats think that They’re the best and all that but look at what bush had to deal with: 1) 9/11, 2) cleaning up after Bill clinton’s F**k ups, 3) and all bush haters riding him for any of his faults….. I mean come on NO ONE is perfect…….And nixon wasn’t that bad either he was just giving the democrats some of their own medicine….
best-Ronald Reagan because he knew what he was doing. and he was cleaning up after a DEMOCRAT’S f**k ups!
worst-tie between Obama and Jimmy Carter
if you’ve got problems with my opinion you can sure as hell email me and f**k off!

January 21st, 2009 at 4:48 AM
Best: George Washington & Thomas Jefferson
Who do you think put this country together in the first place?
Worst: Andrew Jackson
Seriously.
January 21st, 2009 at 12:51 PM
Tough one.
I’ll say the best was Andrew Jackson. He left us with no debt.
On the other hand, he did help Indian removal.
I’d say the worst-Clinton or Bush. Neither gave a damn about the real fundamentals of our economy, except how they could use it to screw the middle class.
I’m giving Obama the benefit of the doubt on principle
January 21st, 2009 at 12:54 PM
I’m sorry. My post makes it look like I view Indian removal as a positive. I view that as a detractor.
January 22nd, 2009 at 11:23 AM
What do you mean, TF?
BTW, although Jackson’s Indian policies were horrible and seriously detracts from his overall record in my book, he wasn’t a horrible president, not in the bottom 5 for sure.
January 22nd, 2009 at 12:33 PM
I know, I think he was probably the best. However, it is not a runaway first.
February 1st, 2009 at 8:40 PM
Best: george washington, abraham lincoln, john f kennedy.
worst: barack obama, george bush, ronald reagon, and jimmy carter.
February 8th, 2009 at 12:17 AM
Anyone that thinks George W Bush was not the worst hasv obviously been living on Mars . How can you say he kept the country safe when 9/11 happened UNDER HIS WATCH??? How can you blame Clinton for what happened when Bush was President? Bush was warned the whole entire summer of 2001 of the threats and he along with his staff ignored them.. As far as best President, I would suspect the most fruitful times of America under a two term or more president.. the worst,, the same.. Bush won one thing on his own.. The worst vote from me
February 11th, 2009 at 7:12 PM
GERORGE WASHINGTON IS BEST NIGGASZ
February 11th, 2009 at 9:23 PM
Lincoln, and George W. Bush are very similar. If you do your homework.
My best would probably be Lincon, and George Washington.
The worst would be. Pierce, and Grant. (As presdent, not as a general)
Best with bad qualities. Nixon, Clinton, and best of all in this catagory, Jackson.
February 12th, 2009 at 2:17 PM
Worse president hands down was Lincoln. Besides getting us into a needless Civil War that killed thousands of Americans, he trashed the constitution, violated the civil rights of citizens and suspended habeas corpus. He didn’t save the Union he created it. Before Lincoln the power resided with the states. Lincoln created big government in the U.S. permanently reducing our freedoms.
February 15th, 2009 at 11:51 PM
Best: Washington, Lincoln, TRoosevelt, Jefferson, Reagan. In order.
Worst: Buchanan, Clinton, AJohnson, Wilson, WHHarrison. In order.
February 16th, 2009 at 11:22 AM
bush isn’t that bad he didn’t really get us into the war in iraq, it was the legislative branch of our government that actually declared the war. besides he wa able to hold his ground with some pretty serious stuff that happened when he was in office like 9/11, Kantrina, and the economy. it is not his fault that the economy is bad right now all you people that blame him for it have no clue how it even started, you have no clue that bush didn’t authorize banks to give off loans to people who couldn’t pay them back, thats why we are in this economic slump, because of lazy people not paying back their bank loans. Look it up. besides everyone only blames him because they have no clue whats going on and the need some one to blame to make things easier for themselves.
February 16th, 2009 at 12:10 PM
Best: George W. Bush.
Worst: Jimmy Carter or Abraham Lincoln
February 19th, 2009 at 12:43 PM
For me Truman is the worst president we’ve ever had by far. He did the most damage. He alone chose to drop two atomic bombs and killed hundreds of thousands of women, children and grand parents. Both our Secretary of Defense and Admiral Williams argued against this act. Esp. since we defeated the Germans without the bomb. The Secretary of Defense actually made great inroads into a diplomatic resolution which would also provide Japan with a sense of honor. We’re still the only country to ever use nuclear bombs. Truman also went against the advice of his Secretary of State and his Secretary of Defense concerning our involvement in the middle east. Our involvement has caused incredible hardships and never-ending tensions.
February 19th, 2009 at 8:33 PM
rc you have no clue . . .
the same govermnet you call “we”( the democrats) are the same people who voted for the so called go no where war in the first place and not based on a “Bush Lie” but based on goverment intellegence reports that the whole (entire)goverment viewed discussed and then voted on. One man does not sum up the whole of the goverment even if that one man is the president.
The democrats remind me of my siblings growing up who when engaging in something together and if something went wrong they would blame it on me deny that they were even a part of it and of course make themselves look good. ultimately leaving me with all the blame.
February 27th, 2009 at 5:49 PM

Worst: Bill Clinton (he was REALLY the one that started this recession).
March 12th, 2009 at 6:55 AM

March 12th, 2009 at 7:00 AM
oh yea and the next big screw up is…this so called president…..
OBAMA..he’s a fake
March 19th, 2009 at 4:35 PM
BEST; Clinton
WORST: Reagan
March 21st, 2009 at 8:16 PM
Roosevelt did NOT end the Depression. True he relieved suffering. But if the War hadn’t come along, the Depression would have kept on trucking along.
And let’s not forget Roosevelt’s craven behavior at Yalta. We’re still paying for that one.
Reagan had two incredible achievements: 1. He ended the Cold War.
2. He set us on the path of nearly 30 years of ecomomic growth.
He towers above everyone except Lincoln and Washington.
Bill Clinton? A leftist who couldn’t do any harm when the republicans took over Congress two years into his term. He’ll be remembered as the man who refused to take out Bin Laden.
George W? History will tell us if the Iraq gambit worked. But in general, he was a disaster. About the only thing good you can say is that he wasn’t responsible for the economic crisis: It was those geniuses Frank and Dodd.
Papa Bush? Turned a friend (Iraq) into an enemy. Thumbs down.
Jimmy Carter? Ah, here we have it: the absolute worst. Much of what is going on in the middleast today can be traced directly to his mind-boggling incompetence.
And his economic policies were a disaster.
And, though not relevant to the issue at hand, it is worth noting that his post-presediential support for dictators makes him the worst EX-president we’ve ever had. This man should be sent to Cuba where he can live out his days playing canasta with Fidel.
March 25th, 2009 at 3:20 AM
I don’t understand the hate for Carter. Some of the ONLY things that are keeping the middle east together are treaties pursued by his administration. See: Camp David Accords.
By far Reagan’s administration is one of the worst in recent history (excluding GW). Let me count the ways… the savings and loan collapse due to addiction to deregulation. This cost $150 billion, $125 billion of which was subsidized by the US government (GEE, DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?!) which directly led to the large budget deficits of the early 1990s.
The Iran-contra scandal, which is a large part of the reason the middle east is so messed up now. Ollie North sold them all the weapons. A true patriot.
In addition, there was the HUD scandal defrauding the US government out of money intended for low income housing.
April 8th, 2009 at 9:03 AM
I LOVE OUR PRESIDENTS! WELL… MOST. I SURE AS HECK WOULDNT WANT THE RESPONSIBILITY THEY HAVE!

April 12th, 2009 at 12:13 PM
French you suck haahaa!!!
April 14th, 2009 at 6:25 AM
Grover Cleveland was the best. Cleveland had the right vision for a President — to let Congress do the legislating and he was to veto any bill that was unconstitutional. Cleveland kept the country out of needless armed conflicts and truely upheld his oath.
Worst – Woodrow Wilson. He himself said he ruined our country by signing the Federal Reserve Act. He also dragged us into a century of entangling alliances and horrific wars.
April 28th, 2009 at 4:46 PM
george bush was not the worst ever. The war was a good desicion. iif we didnt go to war we might if just keep getting bombed. and in the war wwe are helping people in the middle east by trying to change thier gov.
May 4th, 2009 at 8:21 PM
I want to change some of the things I said.
1. FDR- Great depression ( Yes he did solve it after it was caused by the horrible hoover) and WWII.
2. Lincoln- Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation
3. Jackson- Put the poor and middle class first. He was the people’s president, plus he didn’t cause any war or economic problems.
4. Polk- Way underrated!!! He kept his agenda. The Mexican American War, Oregon Purchase, and expansion. He worked himself to death for us, literaly.
5. Thomas Jefferson- Louisiana Purchase and lower taxes. Set the stage for the Democratic Republicans.
May 4th, 2009 at 8:23 PM
Now for the worst….
5. Richard Nixon
4. Herbert Hoover
3. James Buchanan
2. Warren Harding
1. George W. Bush
May 4th, 2009 at 8:24 PM

BEST: Reagan
WORST: Clinton, Carter
May 4th, 2009 at 8:50 PM
Loko you have no clue.
May 8th, 2009 at 8:00 PM
I would say Reagan was the best. He ended the soviet union, which could still have been a problem today if he hadnt taken care of it.
May 22nd, 2009 at 8:47 PM
I would think Abraham Lincon and George Washington would tie for best. Zachary Taylor wouldn’t be far behind because he was a lutienet in two wars which were the Black Hawk War and the Mexican War. Abraham and George are proboaly the best because George was a general in the Revolutionary War. It’s also that he was the first president. I think Abraham would be in that spot too because he wrote one of the greatest speeches. The speech that he announced was the Getysberg Adress. Abraham was also proboally one of the best presidents because he ended slavery, too. The worst president was proboally George W. Bush beacuse he started a war with Iraq for no good reason.
June 9th, 2009 at 1:26 AM

Whoever thought that Carter had the best domestic policy is deranged! Carter took us to triple inflation, triple interest rates, and triple un-employment. Thanks to him half our farmers lost land that had been in the family for a hundred years. Long lines at the gas pumps. No entries in the Olympics that year because — remember? — Sadam was holding American hostages for more than a year. Reagan got them back — and brought down the Berlin wall — by presenting a strong offense without ever firing a bullet. It would be a toss-up for me between George Washington and Ronald Reagan as best; no contest for Carter being the worst.

I mean mr. madden
October 19th, 2009 at 9:06 PM
I have missed emotions bout Regan, but I defiantly will not say that he is the BEST or one of the BEST president. He was a promising President. The WORST I have to say was Bush, Jr. He just ran our economy to the ground. The BEST president I will have to say right now is Obama. He is not only smart, but good in nature. He gave the first day of speech to school kids as a pep talk to give motivation to children who are less fortunate. He also showed that he gave even a care of what happens to the children. Second, he showed care of other festivals, including India’s Diwali. No other president even cared of other festivals, even though they visited the country, they did not show interest of the country. I kjnow that Obama will change our country for the better, but we just have to be patient. I have Full trust and Faith in Obama.

Best-Abraham Lincoln, for his leadership during the American Civil War.
Worst-James Buchanan, for his unwillingness and inability to stop the American Civil War.
February 8th, 2010 at 8:45 AM
FYI Bill Clinton wasn’t responsible for the attacks prior 9/11 and the latter, (he was to busy getting laid on the job) those were fallout from that other Bush screwball. And I nominate him as one of the worst; for lying to the American people when he said no new Taxes (read my lips he said, for subjecting America to a recession and for fathering a son who would screw up America even more and eventually the world leading to a financial crisis who’s effects are still w/ us today, and finally he lambasted Bono. ^^;
