This morning, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, a Republican, formally endorsed Democratic candidate Barack Obama for President.
Because of his unique place in history, Powell’s endorsement has already been called perhaps the most significant of the campaign. Powell is both a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff — America’s top military man who won the first Iraq War in record time — and he is also one of the highest ranking members of the President George W. Bush’s first administration, who we now know was a vocal internal critic of the plan to invade Iraq in 2003.
On “Meet the Press” this morning, Powell said that Obama has shown the temperament and judgment to lead the country.
After his NBC appearance, Powell discussed his endorsement with the rest of the media:

If he hadn’t been such a social liberal (supporting abortion), he could have been the first black president eight years ago. He isn’t going to sway any votes that weren’t already going that way.

The path to an African-American presidency does not lead through 2008’s Republican party, with its current voter base, and it surely didn’t lead through 2000’s GOP.
If Barack Obama narrowly won the Democratic contest basically 51-49, imagine how poorly an African-American candidate would have done in the conservative party.
No, Colin Powell is at odds with his own party — just as John McCain used to be before he went over to the dark side.

I have lost all respect for Brokaw. He did a lousy job at the second debate, but his weekly work at Meet the Press is awful.
Today, he seemed unprepared for the intensity of the double edged endorsement—not only was Powell for obama—he specifically condemned the aspects of McCain’s campaign which so much of the media tiptoes around, trying to remain “balanced”.
But the one thing Brokaw did manage to ask, (because other, less-enlightened folks would want to know) was whether Powell was supporting Obama because they are both black. Can’t let Rush Limbaugh get ahead of him on dumb-assed, insulting, condecending questions. Would he ask Kissinger if he is supporting McCain because they are both white?
