As the Democratic Committeeman of the 21st Ward, I’m proud to report that our ward has retained its title as the largest voting ward in north St. Louis by delivering 6,105 votes for President-Elect Barack Obama — just 41 votes shy of the prize of most votes for Obama, which goes to the 6th Ward (6,146 votes).
John McCain received his most votes out of south St. Louis’ 16th Ward — 3,092 (nearly 41% of the vote in that ward).

That is the old 20th if I am not mistaken. The new 20th on the other hand is looking like a team-four targeted ward. Anybody agree? The other story not reported is the Green party city wide performance, any one else agree? Is this the most under reported story at the local level. By the way, the Green Party will have a contested primary for the Mayor’s race in 2009. The Green Party Central Committee is evaluating candidates for Alderman in the odd wards.

During the 2001 redistricting, the 21st Ward took in a small part of the old 20th Ward (which always had high voting) and a small part of the 3rd Ward (which always had low voting), but the heart of the 21st has remained the same for more than 20 years.

Which leaves the question unanswered, is the local Green Party results in the 2008 local elections the most under reported story of this election?

Hello and thank all that voted without fanfare for the New independent Green Party of St. Louis City. I finally found the results of each ward on the Board of Election web site under “Election Results” I would think Pub.def also has a link but this site has lots of information on it and may not be easy to find. It is amazing that 13,240 people voted to change America and also challenge the current St. Louis City Government.
I always thought Mayor Slay had 10,000 voters who are making money off of the poverty and misery of our city and would vote to keep the same practices going year after year. Now I find that more people would change his poorly conceived policies. We are now able to reach out to the middle and build a free and independent political opposition to the polices that have left our city in decline.

With regards to party politics in the City, I think the development of other parties would be an excellent thing. The city has choked under one party rule, for what, 40 years now? A powerful Green Party would go a long way towards cleaning that up. I would even welcome the rise of a Republican challenger year after year, if just to keep things a bit more honest. Right now, there isn’t any accountability because people in the city will ALWAYS vote Democrat (see Chris Koster). On the other hand, how hard would it be to eliminate city parties altogether?

The national green party platform has some of what you are asking about in the form of proportional representation. This is a notion of in a perfect world how to change government. There are some examples in this country of legislative districts moving in this direction.

Nonpartisan municipal elections would be St. Louis’ best ebt for a level playing field.
Can you image if anyone could file to enter knowing their name would be on the primary ballot and the top three or four would make it to the general election?
And the filing fees went to the city’s revenue instead of party committees?
That’s a pretty compelling vision.
Running progressive Dem-old-crap primary challengers and Green candidates is a stopgap that doesn’t work. We need bigger change.
