Maida on Democratic commitment to Blacks

The St. Louis American and the Post-Dispatch reported this week on controversial comments by former state senator and now Independent candidate for mayor Maida Coleman in which she accuses Democratic leaders of “raping” African-Americans for their votes.

From The American:

“We have gone along with the program, thinking the Democrats are going to change the way the system operates in this state,” Coleman said.

“We have been going along, expecting for the Democrats to change something. I am tired of the Democrats raping us for our votes.”

This is not the first time Coleman has voiced her displeasure with the Democratic Party’s relationship with its African-American base. In a 2006 interview with PubDef.net, Coleman discussed the subject at length.

  1. To all of my Sisiters and Brothers of St. Louis
Sen. Coleman is right. We grew up thinking because we was black we had to vote Demo-You know we have Black Republican ‘s.
I guess they feeling it’s time for a change.

So, why not a Black independent becomming the mayor of St. Louis.

The question we should be asking ourselves:
Why is Slay so upset? If he would have made the trip to the White House to visit President Obama with the other mayors’ maybe we would had recieved more money for St. Louis.
But you know he’s this Interent savvy guy who is to busy worrying about the spring break chicks. Talking about Bumping and Grinding
    Check out this site:
    http://www.zimbio.com/Mayor+Francis+Slay/news

But some folks can’t except the fact that we have a Black PRESIDENT—-GET OVER IT!!!

I guess your Mayor Slay is not a Ass Kisser,
it seems he rather not fight for us-the people of St. Louis. ( Which the minority of black lives in St. Louis) that’s right…he only serves certain areas of St. Louis. My Bad!!

My advise to you people of St. Louis: It’s time for a change. With Slay as mayor again, what will change?? What have he done for you, lately?
If we allow him to win…Slay will go back to his norm….He’s smiling in your face today but what about after the election.
Did you all forget the last election..he come up to you and greeted you. Asking for your support and after the election he turns his head and walk away as you attempt to greet him.
    Not me again!!

I know how you feel Denise Watson-Wesley Coleman.
    Used and dirty!! Yuk…………

Think about the crime rate here. Is it better since he served? What about the jobs, do you have a job? What about education for your children? What condition is the school in? Do your child have computers that work, are the bathroom toliets working in your child schools. The teachers need more money to be able to teach. They spend their own money to buy supply’s for the children.
I bet you: the schools Slay family members and friends children attends have the best, teachers isn’t spending money out of their pockets and the toliets are working!!

Parents- your children deserve the best too!

This is why you need Sen. Maida Coleman–she will fight for your children- her heart is education, she will fight the police officer’s who fight crime and put their lives at risk!

Vote4 Senator Maida Coleman. I promise she will not turn her back on you.
Who am I? I work the same administration as Slay.
    What about that!

Vote SenatorMaida Coleman for your next Mayor of St. Louis, Mo.

Features State News – Jefferson City
State Senator Maida Coleman (D-St. Louis City) today voted against the reappointment of Peter Herschend of Branson to the State Board of Education. Coleman spoke against the nomination for more than 40 minutes in committee Wednesday and for nearly an hour on the Senate floor today before he was eventually confirmed by the Republican-controlled senate. She released this statement afterwards:

In the committee hearing yesterday, Mr. Herschend told me I should be embarrassed of my school district Sen. Coleman said. I think Mr. Herschend should be embarrassed that he has decided to play politics with the children of my district. He should be embarrassed that he callously disenfranchised the citizens of my district by turning control of the St. Louis School District over to the state.

In March 2007, the St. Louis Public Schools lost their accreditation when the State Board of Education voted 5-1 to rescind the accreditation after concluding that the district had met only four of the state’s 14 academic performance measures. Peter Herschend was serving as President of the State Board of Education when the decision to strip the school district of local control was made.

At the time the state board voted to classify the St. Louis Public Schools as unaccredited, several other school districts possessed 2006 Annual Performance Review ratings that were equal to or below the scores assigned to the St. Louis City School District. It makes me wonder why Mr. Herschend has taken no action to reclassify other low-performing school districts, Sen. Coleman said.

There seems to be no apprehension by Mr. Herschend or the Board that they are disenfranchising the voters of a predominantly black city. We are still forced to pay taxes, so we have taxation without representation. Additionally, Sen. Coleman expressed reservations about any person serving such a lengthy term on a state board or commission. Peter Herschend has served on the State Board of Education for 16 years, and with his confirmation by the Senate today, will serve another eight years on the board. Is it a good idea to allow anyone to sit on what is arguably the most important board in state government for 24 years?

Sen. Coleman asked her colleagues on the Senate floor today. If someone were to serve the maximum amount of time in the General Assembly, they could only serve 16 years. If the citizens of Missouri think it’s a good idea to limit the terms of their elected representatives, surely the length of service of an unelected official should be limited as well, especially one who wields so much influence over our children’s education.

Wake up St. Louis… I thought this was the Show Me State! Vote—Maida 4 Mayor!!!

  3. Thre cold, hard fact is this—and it applies to Antonio French, as well as all other St. Louis voters.

If mayor Slay wins re-election, over Maida Coleman, the last obstacle to the dream of Rex Sinquefield, (a man already calling for Obama’s resignation), and other outstate Republicans to steal slps from St. Louis voters once and for all will have been removed.

It is not that they want slps, as much as they want to diminish its existence to a degree that they can make their corporate deals with charter and voucher schools with zero restraint.

Rape, theft, pillage—–use whatever verb works best for you.

  5. That damn Slay’s plan for the blacks in St. Louis is “Gentrification with ethnic elimination (blacks)!”

  6. Go, Maida, Go! St. Louis needs to go non-partisan and get Instant Runoff Voting. This will smash the corrupt and backwards ward orgs to pieces.

Maida is a super strong candidate. She only needs more than 20,000 votes to beat Slay. Why? Because it is the same 20,000 that vote him in EVERY SINGLE TIME. GO MAIDA, GO! SLAM HIM!

  7. I wanted to write to Maida. Her campaign site is a dead end—no longer exists. I wonder if it is her own fault, and I wonder if she knows. Someone please tell her. I can find no way to contact her.

  9. I noticed the pd did not report the green guy’s van fire–(kmox kind of made a deal out of it), then the pd rand a puff piece by Jake Wagman on Slay on Tuesday, and an editorial where they pretended to have attended the Monday night debate–if it had been a report by a 6th grader, I would have given it an incomplete, or called the kid about whether he had actually been there, then today the pd had an article practically praising Rex sinquefield, and a piece by Wagman about the Green Party being the only thing other than the democrats in st. louis. Apparently, Maida Coleman no longer exists.

300 to 1 spending advantage for Slay—game over.

  10. Thoughts from the Plantation Manor
    (Deep South St. Louis Politics)

St. Louis is very backwards. That being said, the reason this power structure remains in St. Louis is the South side conservatives.

Before I go further, I wish to say that by conservatives, I mean: people who want to maintain the status quo, people who value security and stability over rights and justice, and well, racists. I realize that the meaning of “conservative” can be debated near endlessly, hell, some would call me a conservative. However, this is the definition I will use for the sake of brevity in argument.

Lets assume for a moment that St. Louis city had a competent Republican party. This party and it’s candidates would receive not an inconsequential number of votes. Living in the “Deep South” area of St. Louis, I see this firsthand. We have the only Republican in the BOA, and while, it is true, there were more OBAMA signs out during the presidential race, there were about the same number that read MCCAIN, while in the rest of the city, MCCAIN signs were virtually non-existent. This is evidence of the conservative base that exists, quietly, in St. Louis.

The present stagnation on the BOA can be largely attributed to these conservatives. Old men like Wessels and Grigali, and newer slime such as Matt Villa, are re-elected with heavy support, because these conservatives are scared. Scared of what? Scared of change. Scared of families going to public schools instead of the parochials they value so dearly. Scared of *gasp* a gay alderman (nudge-nudge, Cohn). Scared of crime, of any kind. Scared of a black, or worse, female mayor. They know the mayor can, would, and is, stabbing them in the back with charter schools, TIF’s, and such. However, for them, the alternatives are much worse.

But, there is a problem. Why then does the Republican party not have more support? Because these conservatives are not the only ones living in their ward. There are also people who would only support the Democratic Party, no matter what.

BING! What does the local power base do? Republicans in Democratic clothing. That way, they can get both demographics. Ignore these scared people at your peril.

So, what do forward thinking people in St. Louis do? These conservatives turn out in droves to keep their old, reactionary men in office. Their fear makes their turnout unmatched. It is indeed a tough problem.

One thing we can do is eliminate party voting. The Democratic “ward orgs”, their actions, and their little leaflets tell you who to vote for are despicable, and in the majority of other cities in the U.S., would be highly frowned upon. Get rid of them. Go non-partisan. Then we can get rid of this confusion about who is what.

Also, institute Instant Runoff Voting. This allows the public to make the best choice in who they want as their candidate. For more info on IRV

Third, we should make the number of aldermen fluctuate according to population. Say, each ward should contain 10,000 people. That would be enough to foster more competition, without giving more power into less hands.

There are many things we can do to make St. Louis politics, and St. Louis, a better place. Hard economic times may very well eliminate any charter schools in St. Louis. As well as the Post-Disgrace (no tears there, I can get my sports news elsewhere, thank you). Forward thinking people need to position themselves to take the offensive.

  12. I understand the concept of republicans in democratic clothing—mayor slay being the prime example. One of the most astonishing elections in st. louis was held in 2006—school board members defeated slay’s people, despite being outspent 490,000 dollars to 70,000 dollars.

What I found difficult to understand, was the media’s refusal to stand up to Slay. There have to be members of the Pulitzer family rolling over in their graves after a figure like Rex “Obama should resign” Sinquefield called the shots with his buddies Slay and Blunt. (Even Jay Nixon is enough of an actual democrat to be a problem for those assholes.)

I can understand Veronica O’Brien quietly fading out of sight as she suffered her loss of reputation after doing what she had to do to protect herself and her family after the unfollowed up on murder of Tim Bacon in august of 2006.

It has been painful to watch this once vibrant website be turned into a meaningless nothing, as Antonio does whatever it is he thinks he has to do—or does not do whatever he thinks it is important not to do.

  13. The silence of the media is explained easily. Civic Progress. We can’t expect the local media, which are members of the local power base, to give us the truth. Why should they? It would run counter to their own interests. The not just silence, but active warping and distorting of the truth, by the local media, is not at all surprising to me.

On a happier note, the elected Board of Education is a much more powerful and purposeful entity now. In 2011, will the state dissolve the SAB? Or will they just extend it until Charter School candidates form a majority? Something worth thinking about.
