There is a popular joke that says that no matter what city you’re in, you never want to be on Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd after dark.
It’s sad that we’ve done such a poor job preserving a thing that bears the name of one of America’s most celebrated men. But in St. Louis’ 4th and 22nd Wards, an effort has been underway for years to try to redevelop Dr. King Blvd.
In this video we shot in June 2008, Alderman Sam Moore (4th Ward) shows us what we can now consider the “before” of a potentially dramatic transformation. And while the street today is still not ready for its “after” video, a lot of progress has been made.
Watch this “before” video then take a drive down Dr. King over this long holiday weekend that honors the man whose name the street bears.
